This existing heritage
home is well-loved by the owners, who desperately wanted to retain
the character of the house but to remove the later unsympathetic additions
and make the house liveable by twenty-first century standards. By
removing the old roof tiles from the existing part of the house and
re-tiling the old and new together, the link is almost seamless. A
new open-planned living area with spacious, sunny kitchen, bright
meals area and new family room with fireplace opening onto the new
stone terrace were added, with the master bedroom, ensuite and walk-in-robe
upstairs in the roof space. The new stairway has a large skylight
looking up into the linden tree that was lovingly retained and carefully
considered during the design and construction of the addition. The
landscape designer added the wide curving steps in the re-laid sandstone
to the new terrace below the linden tree. (click thumbnail for full-size
