This is a difficult site. The primary feature is a beautiful long view into the natural bushland of Bundanoon gullies to the east. But the northern aspect is to the next door neighbour. The problem was the severe slope of the site from the road down to the rear. The answer was to create a split level home, with the bedrooms located along the front at the street level, and the living areas half a level down and looking out to the views. The kitchen and meals areas are on the northern side for a bright, sunny aspect. To control the harsh sun from the east and to create an outdoor living area elevated off of the ground, a large deck was constructed on the back of the home completely covered with a verandah roof. The water tanks and storage were placed below the deck and out of sight. The house appears to be very compact and simple from the front, but opens up and out to the view as you move through the house and down the stairs. The ceiling is raked at the rear for open, airy living. (click thumbnail for full-size image)
