The owners of this new
home wanted to design a house that was as environmentally friendly
as possible. It is located in East Bowral where there is a tendency
for a uniformity of urban design, so they also wanted something that
would be special but still fit in to its surroundings. With true north
at a forty-five degree angle to the rear of the site, it was decided
to orient the house along this geometry to take full advantage of
the sun. The orientation allowed for the creation of a series of spaces
along the sides and rear of the house instead of long useless and
boring spaces. The orientation also creates an interesting aspect
from the front. The garage is turned on the street’s orientation
to link it to the houses on either side and to the street geometry.
Internally the owners used bamboo flooring, a lovely timber look from
a completely sustainable material. The windows and doors are placed
to maximise good winter sun and minimise hot summer sun, creating
a comfortable temperate environment all year ‘round. (click
